NARAL Keeping Sex "Real"?

NARAL, the organization that has changed its name more than a couch potato changes the channel in an evening, really needs to be found out. They need to be exposed. They need to be better understood by those who think they either follow or reject their views on abortion.

My friend Stan Guthrie recently wrote a blog post on exactly that topic -- showing NARAL for who they are.

No matter where you stand on the issue of abortion (which is a hot topic, even more than usual, with the Judge Roberts nomination) I recommend giving it a read. Stan is a news director for a major publication, so he really knows how to accurately research and sniff out the facts.

Here's the link to the article. Great writing, Stan.

Here's the thing, if you don't read and do research on what you believe, then how can you stand on your beliefs when you talk about the issues with someone who has done their research?

Figure out what you believe, why you believe it, and be able to tell people what you base it on. And, if you do that and disagree with me, I'm completely cool with that. Truly.

French Like the Way They Look!

The French are really impressed with themselves.

"Eight out of 10 French people check their looks in the mirror at least once a day and say they like what they see, a survey by polling group BVA published this week showed.

"Men seem to be more content than women, with 88 percent of them saying they like their looks -- compared to 73 percent of women."

Horse with Hay Fever ... that sux

Stop me if you've heard this one before: "A horse walks into a barn. He sneezes ..."

NEWS STORY: A horse has to sleep on shredded newspaper because he has the equine equivalent of hay fever.

If Teddy is exposed to hay or straw, he starts coughing and wheezing as if he were having an asthma attack.

Owner Samantha Ashby, 19, also has to damp down his feed to get rid of any dust spores, reports the Mirror.

She said: "Straw and hay are banned from his stable. If he is exposed to the dust spores, he looks really pitiful and very chesty."

What Snopes Can't Answer

Snopes.com is an Urban Myth Busting website. They'll tell you if an email you received is true, false, or undetermined.

But, with all of the requests they receive each day, they can't answer them all. So, here's a list of questions -- quirky, scary, et al -- that they haven't answered for one reason or another.

Unanswerables.

If You Support PETA, Read This First..."Ethical" Defined

Instead of supporting PETA, maybe you should think of supporting organizations that support the quality lives of animals. Really. If you support PETA after reading this and confirming the information from other sources, then the animals' blood will truly be, in part, because of your support.

Read this...

The following story is from This is True dated 17 July 2005. It is
Copyright 2005 Randy Cassingham, all rights reserved, and reprinted here
with permission:

"Ethical" Defined

After more than 100 dead dogs were dumped in a trash dumpster over four weeks, police in Ahoskie, N.C., kept an eye on the trash receptacle behind a supermarket. Sure enough, a van drove up and officers watched the occupants throw in heavy plastic bags. They detained the two people in the van and found 18 dead dogs in plastic bags in the dumpster, including puppies; 13 more dead dogs were still in the van. Police say the van is registered to the headquarters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the two occupants, Andrew B. Cook, 24, and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, identified themselves as PETA employees.

An autopsy performed on one of the dogs found it was healthy before it was killed. Police say PETA has been picking up the animals -- alive -- from North Carolina animal shelters, promising to find them good homes. Cook and Hinkle have been charged with 62 felony counts of animal cruelty. In response to the arrests PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said it's against the group's policy for employees to dump animals in the trash, but "that for some animals in North Carolina, there is no kinder option than euthanasia." (Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald) ...Oops, my mistake: that's "Playing God" Defined.

In his author's notes section, Cassingham had more to say about this story:

The more I learn about PETA, the less I think of them. The story of them killing animals isn't even unusual. According to PETA's own filings, in 2004 PETA killed 86.3 percent of the animals entrusted to its care -- a number that's rising, not falling.

Meanwhile, the SPCA in PETA's home town (Norfolk, Va.) was able to find loving homes for 73 percent of the animals put in its care. A shortage of funds? Nope: last year PETA took in $29 million in tax-exempt donations. It simply has other priorities for the funds, like funding terrorism (yes, really). But don't take my word for it: I got my figures from http://www.PETAkillsAnimals.com -- and they have copies of PETA's state and federal filings to back it up. The bottom line: if you donate money to PETA because you think they care for and about animals, you need to think some more. PETA literally yells and screams about how others "kill animals" but this is how they operate? Pathetic.

And you know what I wonder? PETA's official count of animals they kill is 86.3 percent. But if they're going around picking up animals, killing them while they drive around and not even giving them a chance to be adopted, and then destroying the evidence by dumping the bodies in the trash, are those deaths being reported? My guess: no. While 86.3 percent is awful, the actual number is probably much, much higher. How dare they lecture anyone about the "ethical" treatment of animals!

Serious Post: True Persecution

Most of my posts here on this blog are either funny, about fun events or people, crazy inventions, innovations, or crazy news items. But, once in a while I just get fed-up with something and I have to post about it in order to get it out of my system.

This rant is about many Americans, and our misplaced passions.

The media gets all upset about our government holding prisoners who might be dangerous to our country and our people. That gets many people upset. They get upset because the prisoners are made to wear bras. They are upset because the prisoners are barked at by dogs. They are upset because they are sometimes forced to be naked.

All the while, true persecution, torture, and unjust killing goes on in countries such as Eritrea. It's an eastern African country, by the way.

Religious persecution is going on around the world with people being shoved into barrels for days or weeks at a time. Can you imagine that? And they are the "lucky ones" because they might end-up living.

The World Watch List, from OpenDoorsUSA.com puts the worst offenders in this order...

For the third year in a row, the complete lack of religious freedom in North Korea has positioned it first on the World Watch List. The strict Islamic kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues to hold the second position. Vietnam has risen one place to position three, followed by Laos in fourth place. Due to the continued pressure on believers in Iran, the country is in fifth place again this year. The Maldives remain sixth, followed by a new country in seventh place: Somalia. Christian converts from Islam are paying a high price for their new faith, especially in rural parts of this most lawless country in the world. There was no change in the status of religious freedom for Christians in Bhutan, which continues to hold position eight. In China, holding ninth place, the government increased control of religious activities during 2004. The top ten is concluded by a new number ten: Afghanistan, where the status of religious freedom deteriorated mostly because of the influence of Islamic extremists.

The rest of the top 25 includes:

11. Yemen
12. Turkmenistan
13. Pakistan
14. Comoros
15. Uzbekistan
16. Eritrea
17. Myanmar (Burma)
18. Egypt
19. Sudan
20. Libya
21. Iraq
22. Azerbaijan
23. Morocco
24. Brunei
25. Nigeria (North)

Christians are currently being tortured as you read this. All of the things you read about Saddam doing to people in his torture chambers and more are being done to people who live peaceably, choose to follow their faith, even if it means death, and are separated from their families and loved ones for long amounts of time -- perhaps the worst treatment of all for them.

All I'm saying today is remember the true crimes being commited the next time you get up in arms about a prisoner of the U.S. military wearing a bra. Remember that so many others are being imprisoned, tortured, and killed today -- simply because they believe in a different God than the god of their country leaders.

More than 200 million Christians around the world live in places where persecution could come into their lives at any moment of any day.

Whether you could care less for Christianity, you must at least care about fellow human beings being mistreated and wronged like this.

Thank you for letting me get this out of my system. I'll get back to the funny stuff real soon.

Just A Little Different Than A Cabbage Patch Kid...

(NOTE: I really (really) hope this trend doesn't catch-on here in the States.)

THE Korea Baseball Organization recently banned players from placing cabbage leaves under their caps or uniforms. Such is not the case for the League City Barracudas swim team.

The Barracudas, who compete in the Clear Creek Swim League for kids 6 to 18, pay homage to cabbage before every swim meet.

The Korean league issued its edict after a pitcher put frozen cabbage leaves under his cap to help him stay cool. The organization ruled that the cabbage was an alien material that could disrupt a game.

For the League City swimmers, tradition says a piece of cabbage tucked under the elastic of a swimsuit is a good-luck token.

Please...

Thought of the Day...

Thought for the day:

If you consider that there have been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq Theater of operations during the last 22 months that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000.

The rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000.

That means that you are 33% more likely to be shot and killed in our Nation's Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: We should immediately pull out of D.C

Woman loses 33lbs on McDonald's diet?

A US woman claims to have lost 33 pounds by eating nothing but McDonald's for 90 days.

Merab Morgan, of Henderson, North Carolina, began her diet because she found the Super Size Me film insulting.

In the documentary, film maker Morgan Spurlock put on 25lbs after eating excusively at McDonald's for just one month.

Ms Morgan, 35, memorised the calories in almost every menu item, and limits herself to 1,400 calories a day, reports the Detroit Free Press.

"It's kind of like the poor man's diet," said Morgan, who has tried Weight Watchers and Atkins but failed because of the time and money those plans required.

Her goal is to lose 40 to 60 pounds. By Day 67, she had lost 33.

Nothing at McDonald's is off limits, although she's only eaten french fries twice - you're better off eating two cheeseburgers, she says.

Learn Charisma?

Most of us probably think that some people simply have charisma, and others don't -- that those who possess charisma were born with it.

Well, it may be true that being charismatic comes easily for some people, scientists are now saying that you can learn to possess charisma:

Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman is deluded in believing that charisma, or being "well-liked" as he calls it, is more important than ability in making a person a success.

His philosophy is exposed as flawed but he did have half a point. After all, most of the greatest leaders in history possessed a star quality that drew others to them.

Churchill, Napoleon and Martin Luther King had a magnetism which is often easier to identify than it is to explain.

Until now...

We need to continue to aid African countries, but we need to do it in the correct ways...

Truly, THE Ugliest Dog Ever...

The owners of the other contestants in this year's World's Ugliest Dog Contest may have thought their pooches had a chance — until they saw Sam.

The 14-year-old pedigreed Chinese crested recently won the Sonoma-Marin Fair contest for the third consecutive time, and it's no surprise.

The tiny dog has no hair, if you don't count the yellowish-white tuft erupting from his head. His wrinkled brown skin is covered with splotches, a line of warts marches down his snout, his blind eyes are an alien, milky white and a fleshy flap of skin hangs from his withered neck. And then there's the Austin Powers teeth that jut at odd angles from his mouth.

He's so ugly even the judges recoiled when he was placed on the judging table, said his proud owner, Susie Lockheed, of Santa Barbara.
